One of the forms the Pre-Staging Judge will look at is the Outside Assistance Form. They will look at this form to make sure you have no more than 7 team members and that the names match the team members about to give their solution. Remember that once someone participates in creating a solution, they are now permanently part of the team and should be listed on the Outside Assistance Form even if they have dropped from the team. If you have questions about this, please contact us.
Odyssey of the Mind values creative thinking above all else. When a team finds a solution to their problem, but are unable to do something without assistance from outside their team, they should either learn the skill required or seek out another way to accomplish the task. The Outside Assistance form asks the team members and coaches to sign a statement saying that only the team members solved the problem. If the team did receive help from kids or adults not on their team, we expect them to tell us on this form.
Adults, please consider this as a learning opportunity in integrity. We want to teach them to be problem solvers and seek out alternative methods, not teach them that lying is okay.
You can read more on Outside Assistance in the program guide.
Bonus tip: Having an Outside Assistance rule is one of the best things to happen to coaches! It means that you get to have a hands-off and mouth shut approach. What kind of weird things can these kids come up with?
