This is for you, the ones who are driving the carpools, forking out money for pizza, opening closets for major scavenging, waiting while the team cleans up after a meeting, postponing dinner because one more prop needs finished, and generally watching from the sidelines while the team "gets creative!"
We hosted a Parent Informational Night on September 15th here is a link to the recording: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t7oDNNGV3cte-vp1rta0U3ixWqL3hR4c/view?usp=sharing

One of the great things about OM is that the team members are learning valuable lessons about problem solving and independence in thinking. The best way for an adult to help this process is to only be support. You are not a team member and therefore cannot solve any problems the team faces. Let them figure it out or find alternate solutions (no matter how much you want to solve it yourself!)
Check out the Outside Assistance pledge your team members sign and help make sure they keep their integrity by following the chart below.

We also ask you to help the team on tournament day to get props in and out of the building, to move your car from loading and unloading areas as quickly as possible, and to bring a sense of humor to the tournament (because Murphy’s law is an Odyssey of the Mind condition!)
As you can tell, parents ARE important, as resources for learning skills, helping get materials, providing moral support, supplementing working brains with nourishment, and generally facilitating the logistics of a working team. Without your encouragement, your child will not develop the self confidence that Odyssey of the Mind promotes.
We believe that this program offers something unique for your children. We believe that they will learn teamwork, creative problem solving, divergent thinking, persistence, practical skills, and many other abilities through Odyssey of the Mind. Please remember we are all volunteers working together to make this happen.
Speaking of volunteers . . .
Your team is required to provide 1 judge and 1 worker. These people can come from any parts of your life: school personnel, relative, friend, or parent coworker. Please note that judges will be occupied all day and will not be able to go see other performances. Therefore, we ask that parents do not volunteer as judges. Worker positions can be short shifts and are scheduled around the team's performance time so parents can safely volunteer as workers. Please see our Support page for more information.
